Netflix, Prime Video and Disney+ dominate in Europe.

85% of the time spent watching video on demand in Europe belongs to three major global streaming platforms - Netflix, Amazon Prime Video and Disney+. That’s the summary of the report by the European Audiovisual Observatory, set up by the European Council.

The leader is Netflix (53.4% of time spent on VOD). Amazon Prime Video came second (19.45%) and Disney+ third (12.1%). Five platforms had a market share of more than 1%: Canal+ (3.5%), HBO Max (2.8%), Sky Go, Viaplay, Movistar (1% each).

The survey was conducted in Poland, Germany, France, Italy, Spain, the Netherlands, Denmark, Finland and Sweden between September 2022 and September 2023.

The European Audiovisual Observatory found that only 31% of VOD content is produced in Europe. This refers to films, series and TV shows. EU content accounts for 21% and other European countries (e.g. the UK) for 10%. Content from the United States makes up 42% of the catalogue, with 27% coming from other parts of the world.

I wonder if the major players will balance the ratio in their offerings? Recently we have heard announcements about more and more content being produced in Europe.
