Netflix and Carrefour join forces.

Will Netflix's marriage with the French retail giant further strengthen its leadership position in the video streaming market? According to Bloomberg, Netflix's new marketing tactic is aimed at increasing the customer base basic package with adverts.

Representatives from both companies announced details of the collaboration in a joint statement last Monday evening. As part of the trial, customers in Bordeaux and Rouen in France will be able to buy a subscription to a Netflix package with advertising for just €5.99. With this purchase, customers also receive a 10% discount on purchases in the Carrefour supermarket chain and free delivery on purchases over €60. Importantly, those taking part in the pilot can buy a subscription both in-store (in any of Carrefour's 108 stores) and on the Carrefour website. In 10 selected stores in Bordeaux and Rouen, customers will also be able to buy Netflix merchandise featuring the platform's most popular series and productions. The merchandise will include posters, T-shirts, bags and mugs featuring "Stranger Things", "One Piece", "The Chronicle of Bridgerton" and others.

Carrefour also announced that if the trial is successful, it will extend the offer throughout France. Laurent Uguen, Netflix's sales director, stressed in a statement on Monday that the partnership with Carrefour will help to extend the availability of films, series and video games to new audiences.

Netflix's basic package was launched in 2022 and to date there are already 23 million customers worldwide. In the third quarter of last year, the number of Netflix subscribers worldwide rose by 8.76 million to 247.15 million. In 2023, revenues for the undisputed leader among streaming platforms increased by 8% compared to 2022, reaching $8.5 billion.

Not surprisingly, Netflix is looking for new ways to promote its basic package and attract new subscribers. As we know, a similar strategy was adopted some time ago by Amazon Prime Video, which offers its customers free fast delivery when their Prime package is activated. We are sure to hear about new sales ideas from all the other streaming platforms that are keeping a close eye on what Netflix is doing.
